Blue Falls

The Blue Falls
The Icelandic river Brúará tumbles only about 2-3 metres (~6-10 feet), however the glacial silt in the water produce a spectacular blue turquoise making it one of the most spectacular sights in the entire country. Formerly known as Brúarfoss (the Bridge Falls) it was named for a natural stone arch over the river near the waterfall in earlier times. Legend has that a member of the diocese Skálholt destroyed the bridge in 1602 when there was great famine in Iceland. He wanted to keep hungry peasants away who came to Skálholt for food. Some time later, the man mysteriously drowned in the river
